Flute Progressions
This course has been designed to follow on from Kirsten's previous course titled 'Flute Foundations'. The aim of the course is to take flute players whom have already mastered the basics of tone production, ornamentation and intonation up to the next level of playing. The 'building blocks' that were introduced in 'Flute Foundations' will be expanded upon. Focus will be placed on more advanced ornamentation: the crann, the short roll and the bounce. Phrasing and breathing will also feature as will the use of the G# key. It is not a prerequisite to have a keyed flute for this course; in the occasional instance where a key is used, Kirsten presents alternative melodic 'turns' for those with keyless flutes. Reference will be made to the exercises presented in 'Flute Foundations' throughout this course.
This lesson will teach the reel, 'Paddy Mill's Fancy'. The focus will be on how to incorporate breaths into reels without obstructing the rhythm of the tune
In this lesson, the reel 'John Blessington's' will be taught. Intonation (internal tuning) will be the main focus of this class.
'The Gallow Glass Jig' is the tune featured in this lesson. The focus of this lesson will be on the A roll.
This lesson will teach a jig in D. It is a composition of Siobhan O'Donnell's. C natural taps and B rolls will be demonstrated and taught in this lesson.
In this lesson, the Derry Hornpipe will be taught. Kirsten's study of intonation will be continued in this class.
This lesson will teach the jig, "The Blarney Pilgrim". Kirsten introduces the 'D' crann in this lesson.
The Hop Jig 'Pat Over the Hill' will be taught in this lesson in the key of G major. Kirsten will continue with her study of the crann in this lesson, and will introduce the short crann.
This lesson will teach a Hop Jig 'The Dusty Millar'. The focus of this lesson is again on the crann.
The reel 'McFadden's Handsome Daughter' will feature in this lesson. The key of A major will be introduced.
This lesson will teach 'The Kilmovee Jig'. Kirsten will return to the topic of 'breathing' in this lesson when and where to take a breath in the jig.
