Fleadh Tunes for the Flute
This course will feature dance tunes and slow airs that are suitable to competition playing. With regard to dance tunes there will be a progression through ornamentation, variation, phrasing, articulation, tempo, rhythm and tone. When teaching Slow Airs the main focus will be on the phrasing, momentum, appropriate ornamentation, the use of expression and most importantly the history and background to the airs and the accompanying songs, words and translations.
The course will enable the learning flautist to have knowledge of appropriate competition tunes and an understanding of how to approach the topic of air playing.
Is this course aimed at a suitable level for me?
This course is aimed at the player who has already been introduced to basic ornamentation such as the cut, tap and roll. This course will build on this and introduce the player to more complex technique. It is not only geared to the Fleadh competitor but also any flautist who wants to learn tunes best suited to the flute.

Tutor: Majella Bartley
All Ireland champion flute player, Majella Bartley, hails from Corcaghan in Co. Monaghan. She is a respected flute and fiddle teacher, tutoring at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance as well as at national and international summer schools and workshops such as Scoil Eigse, Fiddle Festival of Wales, Kilkenny Celtic Festival and the British and North American Convention of Comhaltas. She holds the TTCT traditional music teaching diploma awarded by Comhaltas and is now a tutor and lecturer on this course. She is also a qualified adjudicator and has adjudicated many competitions including the all-Ireland fleadh..
