The Irish tradition is rich in singing with thousands of native love songs, pub songs, songs of immigration, songs in Gaeilge (Irish) and songs in English. Songs in the Irish language are beautiful to listen to, however it is normally a challenge for anyone to access these songs unless they have a good understanding of the Irish language. Songs in Irish makes these songs more accessible to both the Irish learner and the non-Irish speaker. This course is not only fantastic for music learners but also for learners of the Irish language as songs are the best way to familiarise oneself with the rhythms and sounds of any language.
By the end of the course, you will have a richer appreciation for the Irish tradition and a repertoire of six Irish songs: lively songs, slow songs and funny songs. Song lyrics, written music, chords and English translations are included for each song. The course has 12 lessons, with 2 tutorials each.
Course Structure
The songs in this course are structured from the easiest to the most difficult so that you can build on your skills as you progress. Background information is given for each song, before working through the song, phrase by phrase, with great focus given to correct pronunciation. The melody is then introduced with expert advice on ornamentation, phrasing, breathing and other singing techniques.

Your Tutor
Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, is a native Irish speaker and grew up immersed in the vibrant West Kerry tradition with its wild dance music, soulful slow airs and many beautiful songs. Her father, a fiddler, would bring her to music sessions from a young age. There she began to play music on the flute and tin-whistle; and to sing sean-nós songs, learning from wonderful local singers. She also attended Siamsa Tíre, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland, for several years. She was awarded a Masters in Traditional Music Performance from the University of Limerick in 2002.
